Kundalini Yoga has been called "the yoga of awareness". Classes combine pranayama, asana, mudra, mantra, meditation, and the principles of Sikh Dharma to awaken the kundalini shakti and raise it up to the 10th gate at the crown chakra. Classes also include a gong bath during relaxation (i.e., savasana - "corpse pose"). The importance of Kundalini Yoga, or any yoga for that matter, is not to experience the “kundalini awakening”; rather to prepare the body for deep meditation. Mastery of the material may be achieved over time, but the focus in each moment is on one's own personal experience. Most important is to do one's best and keep up while maintaining an awareness of one's experience in each moment. Kundalini Yoga is all about one's experience.
Each day has a different energy; a different quality unique distinct from any other day. Each class is custom designed to provide an experience in which students may transform themselves while at the same time support the cosmic energy present on that day. I use the Mayan Tzolk'in (count of days) which is a sacred 260 day cycle, to connect with the energy of each day and choose an appropriate kriya (kundalini yoga set) and meditation to support the day's energy.
Above all, Kundalini Yoga is an experience; your unique experience in the moment during our practice together. Some find this transformational. What you find is up to you. I hope you will come and join the experience!
